Now is an exceptionally good time to build homes that 55+ buyers are looking for. First, the construction downturn during the Great Recession eliminated a large percentage of our competition. At the same time, many people who would have liked to move into a new home were frozen into place by a lack of financing, falling equity in their existing homes, and falling stock prices. Now that home prices are rising, the stock market has recovered, and financing is again available, these customers are ready to buy.
The dramatic shortage in desirable housing creates a great opportunity to start a real estate development company. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 76 million Baby Boomers were born from 1946 to 1964, and their retirements will continue driving demand for the next 15 years. Generation X (born 1964 to 1982) will then continue to drive demand.
